What do I even write about? Isn’t there already a blog out there for this?Already doing it much better than me?

No.

Of course, there will be other blogs covering the same niche or topics that you want to write about. But the market is far from being saturated. Your story is unique. Your life experiences, tips, tricks and ideas are unique. No one else will write a post on the same topic the same way that you will.

That’s the beauty of this.

So grab a cup of coffee and let’s get into how to actually start a blog in 2022.

TODAY’S CHECKLIST

  1. Pick your topic or niche
  2. Pick your blog name
  3. Think of your ideal audience
  4. Brainstorm a list of 20-30 posts

how to start a blog in 2020 and start making money blogging

1. Pick your topic or niche

Think of what interests you. What do you have some knowledge on? What’s something you could talk about endlessly? That’s what you need to write about.

It can be overwhelming trying to figure out exactly what your blog is going to be about, but try not to stress too much about it. You can definitely (and most likely will) change your blogging direction as you go.

It is a process.

Try to pin point a few topics you would like to write about and focus on those. You will be able to fine-tune and figure out what works in time.

Some will advocate for having just one very specific niche, but to me it’s more fun and freeing to have a lifestyle blog and post a bit of a variety of things.

A good starting point would be to narrow it down to about 3 main pillars of content. This way you can incorporate a variety of topics, without having too broad of a niche.

My blog started out as a fashion blog, but in time it has transformed into a bit more.

My main three pillars at the moment are: blogging, motherhood, fashion. It’s what I am passionate about. I consider myself a lifestyle blogger because I encompass a few topics, rather than just one.

Here are a few ideas on topics/niches you could write about:

  • Fashion
  • Beauty
  • Motherhood
  • Lifestyle
  • Food/Recipes
  • Books
  • Finances
  • Home Interiors
  • DIY/Crafts
  • Document a journey (weight loss, starting a blog, pregnancy etc.)

2. Think of your blog name

We are going to get more specific on this part in Day 2 of this series, but for now you might want to start thinking of a few blog names that would suit you.

I recommend going with something a bit more broad, in case you want to change your niche in the future.

For example, if you get your domain CookWithAnna dot com to post recipes and then you become a mom and decide to blog about babies, your domain name might become irrelevant.

You never know where your blogging journey will take you.

Keep the name simple so that it can grow with you.

You don’t have to include your name if you don’t want to. My blog obviously doesn’t include it. I wanted my name to include the word “fashion” since it’s one of the main things I was interested in at the time. And then “cappuccino” because I’m a big coffee lover and I felt like that part of the name gave it a feel of having a coffee-chat together on random topics. If that makes any sense.

Don’t think too hard about the name. I don’t think that’s what makes or breaks a blog.

Your actual content will be much more important than the name.

Try to make it simple and easy to remember. Jot down a few ideas for today and we’ll go more in depth about it tomorrow.

3. Think of your ideal audience

Try to pinpoint what type of audience you are reaching out to. Do you want this blog to be something moms would like to read? Or finance enthusiasts? Or someone who’s interested in fashion? Or someone who wants keto recipe ideas?

Having an audience in mind will make it easier for you to come up with post ideas.

One of the main secrets to growing an audience and gaining more traffic on your blog is to make content that bring VALUE to someone in some way.

People will come to your blog if they find the solution to one of their problems.

I think this is key for growing your blog. And it’s what I have learned in the past few months of blogging.

Imagine your ideal audience. Try to think of what problems they might face and try to present solutions to those problems.

It might sound overwhelming. However, your solutions don’t have to be the be-all end-all to every problem. As long as you provide some value in your content, you’re on the right path.

You will get the hang of it once you get started and really put effort into your blog.

4. Brainstorm a list of 20-30 posts

You’ve got a topic or a few topics that you’d like to talk about, a possible blog name in mind and your ideal audience. Now let’s get out a notepad (or an app on your phone) and write down a list of 20-30 posts you might want to write.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t actually have to write all those posts.

It’s just a brainstorming exercise.

If you find that you get stuck for ideas, look into other blogs in a similar niche. What are they writing about? Can you put your own spin on those ideas?

I have a few lists of blog post ideas to help you out:

If you’re finding it hard to come up with ideas you would like to write about, maybe consider another niche/topic. It’s a good exercise to see if it’s something you will enjoy writing about.

That’s it for today. You have a good base to start with.

In tomorrow’s post we will talk about how to actually set up your blog, get your domain, hosting and get it going.

I’m excited for you and the start of your blogging journey!
