IKEA meatballs fakeaway easy recipe

Today I’m sharing the Ikea inspired meatballs recipe, complete with a delicious cream sauce.

Since we are spending a lot more time at home these days, I know at least in our family – we’ve been craving quite a few takeaway dishes that are not really available at the moment.

So I thought I would try and recreate a few takeaway meals (or fakeaway, as they are called nowadays).

Here is a quick video of the steps to create it. Scroll a bit further for the full list of ingredients.

This recipe for swedish meatballs is a really good heartwarming one, very much a comfort food. And it is fairly easy to achieve.

Ikea have recently posted their meatballs recipe on their Instagram, so I screenshot it and tried to recreate it with what I had on hand. This turned out much better than I expected, so if you’ve been craving these Swedish meatballs lately, you’re in for a treat.

They suggest using either beef or pork mince (or a combo of both), but if you prefer using a meat-free alternative, you can definitely opt for something like the Quorn mince.

One tip if you’ve got time to spare, once you have shaped your meatballs, stick them in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. This helps them keep their shape when you cook them afterwards.

I cooked them in olive oil, but you can easily replace that for vegetable oil or butter.

A tip for cooking the sauce is to keep whisking while adding the flour and the other ingredients, so that it doesn’t get all clumpy.

Additional Time 5 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 500g mince (beef or pork)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 100g breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tbsp whole milk
  • salt and pepper

Cream Sauce

  • 40g butter
  • 40g plain flour
  • 150ml vegetable stock
  • 200ml thick cooking cream
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard

Instructions

  1. Into a bowl, add the mince, finely chopped onion, crushed garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk and a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper. Mix them all together (it's easier using your hands).
  2. Shape the meatballs and cook them in a pan with olive oil. Keep turning them to cook evenly on all sides.
  3. For the sauce, melt butter in a pan and gradually add the flour while whisking. Add the vegetable stock and mix thoroughly. Add the cooking cream, soy sauce and mustard. Mix and simmer until the sauce has thickened a bit.

Notes

Serve the meatballs with the cream sauce on top. A great side for this dish would be mash potatoes and peas.

If you try the recipe, I would love to know what you thought of it. More recipes here.
