Today I am sharing how I revamped some of our lamps from old and plain to these lovely DIY boho rattan lamp shades.
Rattan is everywhere at the moment and for good reason. It looks absolutely stunning in boho homes and gives a more cosy vibe to any room.
I wanted to add more of that rattan look to my home so I started looking for ideas on a budget on how to do that.
Because I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend a fortune redecorating my home. This DIY is a bargain one that looks great!
So I found this DIY Rattan Style Lamp Upcycle by the lovely Emily at DossierBlog. I felt so inspired by it and I wanted to recreate my own version of it.
So today I’ll be sharing with you exactly how it went and how I did my easy DIY project.
How Do You Upcycle A Lamp?
You might be wondering what are some easy ways to upcycle a lamp.
Maybe you have an old lamp that is scratched or that you don’t like anymore. Or maybe it just doesn’t fit your decor anymore.
Perhaps you just want a refresher in your home.
You can easily upcycle a lamp by:
- Using spray paint – either on the lamp shade or on the base, or maybe both.
- Using decals to make different shapes on textures on your lamp shade. Stick the decals on the lamp shade and paint or spray paint around it.
- Using twine or raffia. You can glue this around the lamp shade in order to create different designs or maybe it look like it’s knit.
How Do You Make Boho Decor?
Rattan and bamboo home decor is everywhere on Instagram and in home stores. Whether that’s rattan mirrors or simple baskets.

DIY Boho Rattan Lamp Shades
If you want to incorporate more of the boho aesthetic into your home, then this DIY project is perfect for you.
I’m going to walk you through: what you need for this project, how to put it together and a few tips I have learned along the way.
What You Need For The DIY Boho Rattan Lamp Shades
Here is exactly what I used for these DIY boho rattan lamps:
- Older white lamp I had from Wilko
- Wooden dowels
- Raffia ribbon
- Glue gun
- Rustoleum Painter’s Touch White – matte spray paint
How To Create These DIY Boho Rattan Lamps
Clean Old Lamp
Start by giving your old lamp a good clean. A simple dust cloth will do fine, just make sure your surface is free of dust particles.
If you don’t like the colour of your lamp shade, you can spray paint it before adding the dowels on.
Dowels Size
Make sure to measure your lamp before ordering the dowels. This way, you will see exactly how long your dowels need to be in order to fit your lamp shade perfectly.
However, if you can’t find the exact length that you need, then buy longer ones. You can then use a sturdy pair of scissors to cut them to the length you need.
How To Glue The Dowels
Using your glue gun, make one small dot at the top and the bottom part of your dowel. Then stick it to the lamp shade. Hold it in place for a couple of seconds to make sure it is glued on.
Make sure to leave a bit of space between each dowel. Watch video above to see how to do this exactly.
Repeat this process until your entire lamp shade is covered in dowels.
How To Add The Raffia Ribbon
Using the raffia ribbon, go around the top and the bottom of the lamp, using your glue gun to glue it in between dowels.

The Base
Now you can take the base off. I recommend leaving it on while you glue the dowels, as it makes it easier to hold the lamp.
After you finish the lamp shade, take off the base. Head outside and give it a spray paint.
Make sure to leave it to dry for at least 24hr (or as instructed on the spray paint package).
Then you can put the lamp back together and it’s done!
