If there is anything incredibly precious in any mum’s life (aside from their children – obviously), that is TIME.
As a mum, I sometimes find myself constantly scrambling to get everything on my to-do list done while keeping my toddler happy and keeping a semi-tidy home.
It is not an easy task, which I’m sure you already know if you’re a mum.
Over the years I think I’ve found quite a few time-saving hacks that are true life-savers. I thought today I would share a few with you.
7 Time-Saving Hacks for Busy Mums
1. When you leave a room, grab with you an object that doesn’t belong there
I recently read this quote that changed the cleaning game for me.
I can’t remember exactly where I read it or if I heard this on a podcast, but it goes something like: Whenever you go North, take something that belongs North with you.
It might not sound like much, but it truly makes a difference.
Say you leave the living room to grab some water from the kitchen. Before leaving the room, take a look around and see if there’s anything that belongs in the kitchen that you can take with you.
An empty glass, plates lying around, empty wrappers etc.
It’s a really small task that actually adds up and makes your future cleaning process less overwhelming.
2. Use a pill reminder app: Safe and Sound
With the cold and flu season still hanging upon us, we’re all still fighting the sniffles, so lots of medicine was in order.
Between my Lemsip and my toddler’s paracetamol or ibuprofen – it’s sometimes hard to remember what time you took the last pill and when the next one is due.
Especially when you’re sleep deprived because your little one’s been up all night coughing.
Which is why I think an app like this is brilliant.
Whether you want to keep track of your daily prescriptions or you need to remember what time you gave your baby their medicine last, this app will help so much.
You can keep it simple or create complex schedules, you can get notifications when it’s time to take the next dosage and you can keep track of any missed medications – so helpful.
It’s a truly amazing app that will give you a peace of mind and take some stress off your shoulders.
You won’t need to remember all the times you took a medicine – the app will do it for you.
3. Set a timer for 10 minutes to clean – you will be surprised
I love doing a speed clean. And once you give it a try yourself, I’m pretty sure you will love it too.
Here’s how it works.
Set yourself a timer for 10 minutes (or 5 if you have less time available) and try to get as much done as possible in one room of your home.
You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish in such a short amount of time if you focus on one area specifically.
I usually find that once I get in the zone, I want to keep on cleaning. But you don’t have to if you’re short on time.
Stick to the timer and you will see how much easier it feels to get it done.
It truly is small tasks like this that make the whole load of chores feel lighter.
You will not allow yourself to get overwhelmed by doing this technique – that’s why it works so well.
4. Listen to podcasts or audiobooks while: walking, commuting, cooking, cleaning
I don’t know about you, but I have found it increasingly hard to find the time to sit down with a book or read articles on subjects that interest me – whether they are career related or parenting ones.
There’s always something else that’s higher on my priority list.
One thing I’ve found that works amazing for me is to listen to podcasts or audiobooks while doing other mindless chores.
I have been completely hooked to these and I listen to podcasts while I am walking to run errands, cooking dinner, cleaning, folding laundry etc.
It’s an amazing use of your time.
My most recent audiobook was You are a Badass by Jen Sincero (listen to it for free here). It is truly mind opening and it gives you a very different perspective on life, along with the motivation you need to chase after your dreams.

5. Use a slow cooker
I received this slow cooker for Christmas and I was ecstatic to try it out.
It is so amazing to put on the slow cooker in the morning and come back in the afternoon to a wonderful smelling dinner ready to go.
I don’t know about you, but mornings are definitely my most productive time, so being able to “cook” dinner in the morning and have it ready to go and warm by dinner time – that’s a life saver to me.
All the recipes I have tried turned out delicious and it’s sooo easy to use.
You just pop everything in, turn it on and leave it to do its magic.
6. Use catch-all baskets
I probably have a basket in every nook and corner of our home.
I have one in the medicine cupboard, one in my toddler’s room, one in our bedroom, multiple ones for toys, some in drawers.
You get the point.
It is so handy to have little places where you can throw things in to get them out of the way quickly.
It’s a sort of organised-mess that really works for us.
For example, we don’t usually wash pyjamas after every single night, so having a basket in my toddler’s room to put those in throughout the day helps avoid a possible floor-drobe situation.
Baskets will help your home look much more organised.
7. Clean as you cook
I do my best to clean as I cook and it makes a world of a difference to the aftermath.
Done with the chopping board?
Put it in the dishwasher.
Finished up with the wooden spatulas?
Wash them quickly in the sink.
This way you avoid having a huge pile of dishes to tackle after enjoying your meal.
These are the tips and hacks for busy mums that have helped me the most.
