Well, well, well, if it isn’t another wardrobe declutter. Times have changed—well, seasons have changed—and that means I need to do a swap over in my wardrobe.

I’ve done some extreme wardrobe declutters in the past, going from over 300 items of clothing in my wardrobe and other wardrobes we had around the house, all the way down to about 45 items.

The thing is, though, the 45 items were in my autumn/winter wardrobe. Now we’re moving into spring and summer, so I’m swapping things around and building my wardrobe for the season. And I’m taking you with me for the journey.

I have a few pieces for spring and summer that I know straight away I’m going to declutter. Then there are some “fantasy self” items I want to share with you today that I think I’m ready to let go of.

And I also have several pieces that I’m a little bit undecided about. But I’m going to add all my spring/summer items to my digital wardrobe, and I’m going to try to track my outfits throughout the season. This way, I will be able to see which pieces I’m actually wearing and which ones are just sitting there.

Keep reading below or watch the video:

Step 1: Take it all out

When I used to have a massive wardrobe, taking everything out was really overwhelming. This step just didn’t work for me—it made me feel stressed, and I didn’t really get through everything in one day because it was just too much.

Now that my wardrobe is a much more manageable size, I feel like I can do this. Taking everything out is no longer overwhelming, and it gives me a blank canvas to work with.

Step 2: Store seasonals

For this step, I’m using two boxes from Ikea. In one of them, I’m storing the thick winter coats. I’m going to keep a few layering pieces for the spring season, as there might still be some chilly days.

In another box, I’m storing away my boots, all the winter accessories, like hats and mittens, and my “painting outfit”. I’ve used this outfit for painting our fence and the Billy bookcase we’ve done, and I’m keeping it for whenever we do a DIY project like that.

I keep these boxes up on top of my wardrobe, and my kids and husband have similar boxes on top of theirs, storing out-of-season items as well.

When it comes to my cosy knits, including my lovely Sezane cardigans, they all go in a drawer under the bed, as it was empty anyway. They are just too hot to wear right now, but I’ll miss them.

Step 3: Declutter

I know I have a few pieces I haven’t really worn that much that I do want to get rid of.

One of them is a flowery blouse by Zara. I found it on Vinted last year, I think. I loved it so much at the time, and I still really love its print; it’s so beautiful. And I did wear it over the Easter holidays, but it just reminded me why I don’t wear it that much.

It’s a little see-through, so it needs the right underwear, and it has a pretty deep V-neck. For me, it’s just one of those blouses that looks really lovely, but it’s so fidgety, and I keep readjusting it. So I’m not really enjoying wearing it, though I do love it.

It’s really beautiful, but I will let it go and put it up for sale on my Vinted as somebody else might enjoy it more than I do.

I also have a pair of jeans that I really wanted to love, and I did at first. They’re Levi’s Ribcage Straight jeans, bought on Vinted, but I think I should have probably gotten a size smaller. I just wanted them to be comfy, and they are, but I feel like they’re just too big on me. I love the colour, and I really wanted to love them, yet I’m not enjoying wearing them. I’ll put them back up for sale as they’re still in great condition. Hopefully, somebody else will enjoy them.

Since going more clutter-free, I noticed that I’m more intentional with what I keep, and I pay more attention to how clothes make me feel. When I put something on, I want to feel really good and comfy. I want to feel like myself. If the clothes don’t make me feel like that, then there’s no point in keeping them. And I’m no longer keeping things for a “fantasy me”.

Speaking of that “fantasy me,” I have a couple of items that I bought a long time ago, maybe in 2020, and I think I can count on one hand how many times I’ve worn them since.

They are two Primark hats, and they were so on trend when I got them, and I absolutely gave in to that trend. I loved them at the time and I think I have my Instagram profile picture with one of these. But it might be that I loved the idea of them a lot more than actually wearing them and getting use out of them.

I also think I kept them for a long time for sentimental reasons. They were among some of the first pieces that I bought from Primark when we moved to the UK. I was so excited to do all the shopping here, especially in London—it was very exciting. So I think I held on to these for that sentimental reason. But I think I am finally ready to let them go. I’m not wearing them, there’s no point in keeping them in a basket in my wardrobe.

When it comes to sentimental items, I think it’s good to also give ourselves time. Sometimes we might not be ready to get rid of certain items straight away. It’s absolutely fine to keep them—maybe stored away, maybe in a decide-later box—and see how we feel in a few months, especially if we have the space for that.

I also bought, at the beginning of winter, a pair of Levi’s black jeans that were on sale in John Lewis. I thought they were going to be such a staple that I was going to wear them a lot. Or maybe I just fell into the “sale trap”, and I got too excited. But it turns out I haven’t worn them much since then. So I already decluttered them after just a few wears.

Step 4: Organise back

Now that I’ve let go of the items I’m certain I won’t wear anymore, it’s time to put back the clothes I’m keeping. And I love organising them by color, it brings me so much joy. So let’s do this!

I’ve got three pairs of shorts and I think I wore them quite a decent amount last year. Two pairs are similar, one is blue and one is brown. And the third one is a pair of mom jeans that I might actually have to get a different size this year—I’ll have to try them on. All three are going back into the wardrobe.

I also have a few pairs of jeans. One of them is mom jeans by Mango, in a slightly darker wash. They’re kind of fitted at the top, so I would say they’re a little bit more like a straight jean on me.

Another pair is Claudia slim-fit jeans by Mango as well, in a slightly lighter wash. You might be able to tell I’m trying a few different kinds of jeans at the moment.

My super light wash jeans that I’ve had for a really long time are my favourite ones, I love them so much. They’re the Stradivarius Slim Mom jeans.

And I have a pair of beige jeans by H&M that I’ve started wearing a lot more, and I’m actually enjoying them. For the longest time, I didn’t wear them, and I was this close to decluttering them. But I wanted to give them another chance, and I’m really enjoying wearing them.

Then I have a pair of super comfy light grey trousers by F&F, and they look a little bit smarter. I got them a long time ago.

All five pairs of jeans and trousers go back into the middle drawer in my wardrobe.

Next, I’m keeping the long-sleeved tops from my autumn/winter wardrobe for this season as well. They’re simple layering pieces, one white, one grey and one black. I might end up not wearing them, but I’m keeping them here for now, as it’s not that warm yet.

I also have little vest tops, some of them by T-Store, and they are in different colours.

All these layering pieces go in the same drawer as the jeans and trousers, neatly next to each other.

In the bottom drawer, I have four pairs of leggings, and they are Adanola or Lululemon. This drawer is where I also have pyjamas, some biker shorts by Lululemon and sports tops for working out.

Next up, my summer trousers that I absolutely love, they are going in my spring/summer wardrobe for sure!

One pair by H&M is still my go-to, even though I’ve had them for years. They feel really nice, lightweight, and breezy, and they don’t crease very much. They’re super comfy and loosey-goosey, but still a bit flattering. I just love wearing them, so a year or two ago I bought them in beige and black as well.

And then I’ve got a skirt that I’ve had for a long time from H&M, and it’s just really lovely. Even though I don’t wear it as much as my dresses, I really love having it. It’s my go-to when I want to dress up a bit and feel a bit more special, so it’s going in the wardrobe for this season.

Moving on to T-shirts, my absolutely favourite one is the clean-cut T-shirt from Cos in white. I’m definitely keeping it.

I also have a grey one from the T-Store, which is a really lovely cotton one. And a black T-shirt from Mango, made of viscose and with a V-neck. I think I’m going to get it in white as well.

I do wear white tops and T-shirts a lot in spring and summer, so these three are going back in.

Next up, two shirts are also going into my wardrobe. One is a simple white shirt that I’ve had for a long time. I really love it. It’s a little bit more fitted—not tight, just a slim fit.

And the other one is a white linen shirt that I really want to love. I really want to love linen, but it creases so easily, regardless of how well I iron it. So I’m just not sure if it’s for me and if I’m enjoying it. But I’m going to give it another chance and see how I get on this season.

The next item to go into my wardrobe is a little cardigan from Urban Outfitters that I randomly found on Vinted. I’m unsure about it, though, as I just feel like I’m drowning a bit in it when I wear it. But I’ll try and wear it as a layering piece. I’ll put it in my digital wardrobe anyway, and see how I get on with it this spring.

I feel like in my spring/summer wardrobe at the moment, I have a few more bits than I had in my previous one, for which I had already decluttered quite a lot. I started my digital wardrobe at the beginning of autumn, and it’s been eye-opening. This season’s items still need me to go through them, so I’m going to do a digital wardrobe this season, too.

Moving on to cardigans.

I have one that’s oatmeal toast cardigan. It’s a really lovely, lightweight cardigan, 100% cotton. And I have it in navy as well, as it’s such a nice layering piece. It doesn’t keep me too hot, but it’s nice when I want something over my arms.

Then I’ve got a cashmere pink one from John Lewis.

These three are good layering pieces, so they’re going in my wardrobe.

Speaking of layering pieces, I have a few more that will be part of my spring/summer wardrobe.

One of them is a jeans shirt by Levi’s that I bought on Vinted a while ago. I remember wearing it a few times last year, so we’ll see how we get on with this one, but I’ll keep it for now and see how many times I actually wear it.

Another one is a dark grey jacket from H&M that I’ve had for five or six years now.

And then I have an H&M blazer

It will be interesting to see at the end of the season how many of these I wear on a regular basis and how many I’ve kept for so many years, but don’t wear.

Then I’ve got a stripey Sezane jumper that I just love wearing. It’s a little bit lightweight, as it’s just cotton. I had it in my autumn/winter wardrobe, but I think I’m going to keep it in just a bit longer because it’s a nice piece for chilly mornings or evenings.

Next, it’s sweatshirts, and I’ve got three of them (blue, black, and light grey), plus a beige hoodie. I’m keeping all of these as they’re good pieces, at least for now, though in summer, I probably won’t wear them as much.

I also have a Vinted find that I am so excited about. It’s another Sezane piece, a Will jacket this time, in a kind of rust salmon colour. It’s a really nice piece for spring, so I’m looking forward to wearing it.

Then I have two black coats that I usually keep downstairs next to the entrance.

One is a Mountain Warehouse raincoat. It’s a super lightweight one. I actually stole it from my husband, because I loved it so much. Sometimes I like the fit of certain men’s items for myself, and this is one of those pieces.

And then I have a teddy coat, in a nice fleece, but I’m not sure if I’m going to wear it this season. I might want to throw it on if it’s really chilly. So I’ll keep it downstairs for now and see. I might end up putting it away in storage as well.

Moving on to dresses, it looks like I have five.

One of them is by Numph. I got it last year and I love it so much.

I have a lot of neutrals in my wardrobe, and when it comes to colour, I do enjoy wearing pink and blue. For some reason, that seems to be my go-to, and it’s something I’ve realised since decluttering and being more intentional with my wardrobe. I didn’t really know that before. I would just buy lots of random colours, and then I’d be surprised that I wasn’t wearing them. But I’ve worn the Nymph dress so much last year, and I’m just so excited to wear it again.

Then I’ve got a flowery dress by Next from a few years ago, and it’s such a beautiful one.

You know those dresses that you put on and they just make you feel good? These two dresses are some of those for me. I’m so excited for this season.

I also have a pink, lightweight short dress that is more for when it’s really hot outside. It’s by Vero Moda, and I got it last year on Vinted as well.

And then two more dresses that are more straight are going in my spring/summer wardrobe. I’ve had them for years. One is a simple beige one from Primark, and the other is a sage green one by H&M. I really like how both look, but I didn’t wear them last year. I’m going to give them another try, see how I feel in them this year. If I don’t like them, then I’ll obviously let them go.

And this is it, my spring/summer wardrobe is ready for the season! So I’ve got my off-seasons at the top, and then this is what my wardrobe currently looks like
